Current Joys: Summertime

It’s been awhile friends, but I’m here with some hot tips for summer! Here’s a rundown of a few things that have been on my radar during this very hot July.

Vintage De Simone Pottery

I came across this colorful pottery while perusing Etsy and immediately got hooked! The whimsical, figurative designs painted in vibrant colors are instant mood enhancers. Ceramiche De Simone is an Italian brand that was founded in Sicily in the 1960s by Giovanni De Simone. His original designs were inspired by Sicilian folklore as well as the artwork of Picasso, Matisse and Klee, and the pottery is still being produced today. My favorites are these vintage fish serving platters and wild candlesticks that I found on Etsy.

Etruscan Pasta Recipe from Heidi Swanson

Speaking of Mediterranean delights, this insanely delicious recipe from Heidi Swanson is the new favorite in our house. I went to a dinner party recently where our wonderful hostess cooked this dish and I was smitten. Simple to make, with clean ingredients and bright flavors, this pasta is the perfect summer dinner. Not to mention how beautiful it would look served in some De Simone bowls ;)

Raffia Bags from Verloop

If you know me, you know I have a color-blocking obsession, especially when it comes to purses. These adorable bags from Verloop caught my eye while scrolling through instagram and I am IN LOVE! Made with deadstock raffia in amazing colors, I kind of want them all LOL… help!

New Stockist ALERT!

Mowgli Surf Shop

I am so stoked to share our newest stockist, Mowgli Surf Shop! Mowgli is opening their flagship store this Friday July 28 in Los Angeles. I’ve been a long-time admirer of their bold and colorful clothing line (think technicolor tie-dye and cheeky air-brushed tees) and am honored to have Sjo Jewelry included in their awesome new space. Can't wait to check out these custom, one-of-a-kind surfboards that they commissioned for the shop, shaped by Mike Hynson and hand-painted by Starman.

Magic for Humans

Maybe I’m late to the party on this, but I just came across Justin Willman’s Magic For Humans on Netflix and cannot stop watching. Justin is a charming and dare I say, down-to-earth, magician who performs truly mind-bending tricks in front of unsuspecting Angelenos. Highly recommend for a refreshing dose of wonder and lightness.

Holly Coulis: Turn

I’ve been drooling over them on instagram, but I really want to get over to Philip Martin Gallery to see “Turn” an exhibition of new paintings by Holly Coulis, IRL. I must admit, I was initially drawn in by Coulis’s color palette and the fact that there are cats in her paintings, but the more I look at them, the more intriguing they become. Riffing on traditional still life painting, she depicts every day objects (fruit, vases, glasses, CATS!) alongside various shapes, all with vibrating edges of color, rotating the forms in unexpected ways. I like the underlying idea of the interconnectedness of all things. It’s a beautiful thought - I can't help but be reminded of an article from The Atlantic that has been circulating about the recent discovery that a “cosmic background” exists. Scientists have detected ripples in the structure of space and time - the gravitational waves that Einstein surmised existed over 100 years ago. In other words, evidence suggesting that every single thing in this universe, from its birth until right now, is vibrating along to the same cosmic rhythm. How wonderful is that?
