Current Joys

A rundown of the things that have been delighting my senses lately!

Kevin Germanier’s Jubilant Beaded Dresses

I’ve loved Kevin Germanier’s exuberant and joyous clothing for awhile now, but his latest collection really takes the cake! Germanier’s dazzling confections are made with deadstock materials (lots of BEADS!), and I am obsessed with the imaginative ways he combines textures and colors. For this latest collection, he channeled the vibe of a mad scientist dreaming up new alien creatures and the results are spectacular! Read this interview with him over at Vogue to discover more!

Summer Soundtrack

In LA, summer always come early and as soon as the temperatures rise above 80 degrees, I put on this playlist, featuring some of my favorite artists. Full of trop-pop and upbeat, happy jams, this is my go-to heat-wave mix! Featuring Fantasydub, Fool’s Gold, Lizzy Mercier & more!

Dreamy Painted Landscapes by Guimi You

A dear client & friend of mine is an art advisor (Cusp Contemporary) with excellent taste, and she posted about Guimi You’s work on instagram a few months back. I was immediately drawn to You’s delicate yet striking use of color. Her paintings seem to vibrate with energy, suggesting that they may change in an instant, but also have a quiet stillness to them, as if we are being allowed to sneak into a private moment. She’s able to imbue an everyday image (like taking out the recycling) with a magical quality, which I think is a nice reminder to appreciate the beauty all around us.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

Looking at Guimi You’s paintings reminded me of a film we watched recently that I thoroughly enjoyed (yes, it features cats) - The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. A biopic about Edwardian artist, Louis Wain (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), the movie tells the story of a visionary and talented, yet tormented man. Wain is known for his wild, whimsical (and oftentimes psychedelic) depictions of cats, and is credited with reframing the way Victorian era people thought about felines. A fun cameo is made by Nick Cave, who happens to be a fan and collector of Wain’s work. But, you better bring some tissues, because you will shed tears watching this emotional portrayal of a complicated and intriguing human being.
